Art at TWPS

We thought we'd share some samples of work by the talented students of TWPS!

Gr. 6 students learned about colour - tone, tint, shade and how these elements of design are created. In this summative assignment, they experimented by choosing one colour to show in various tones, tints and shades.

Gr. 3 students learned about line, shape and colour and how to create a variety of landscapes and pop art images.

Mrs. Bader's group created some beautiful watercolours during our first Wellness Wednesday session!

We have some budding young artists at Thornhill Woods P.S!

TWPS happenings!

All our students engaged in the worldwide Hour of Code event!

Grade 7 students visited  Gr. 3 students to share the learning about the fur trade. Gr. 3's have been learning about Pioneers in Canada so it was a great opportunity for the two grade to connect their learning.

Our food and toy donations are amazing and growing by the day.  Two very large bags of toys were gratefully accepted by the firefighters at the firehall on Dufferin (behind Canadian Tire).  The Chai Lifeline box is full too and the hallway outside the library is overflowing with non-perishable food items.  Thank you so much TWPS families for your generous donations! Mrs. Cohen and Ms. Vanderzon and our entire staff are so proud of our students.

GR. 3 SCIENCE
Students in Gr. 3 have been having fun while learning in Science class.
During the Plant and Soil unit each student conducted an experiment to grow a bean seed into a plant without soil or sunlight. This process is called Germination. See below for a picture of the experiment.

Here is the procedure used to create the bean seeds as well as a detailed description.

MOvember Celebration!

Yesterfday we celebrated the end of MOvember.  Our  male teachers have been growing their mustaches for the month and they have been working hard at raising money to treat various cancers.  Their dedication inspired our students to raise just over $1000.00!

During the celebration assembly, classes that had raised the most money participated in painting the mustache of their choice with vibrant coloured paint.

Everyone had a great deal of fun and we are proud and happy to have contributed to such a worthy cause!

Art in Kindergarten

From Ms. Alati and Ms. Johnson:

Students in Kindergarten  discussed  the importance of Remembrance Day and why we wear a poppy.

This inspired us to study the work of  artist Georgia O’Keeffe, who is known for her paintings of poppies.

Children began making their own poppy paintings  in the style of Georgia O’Keeffe.

Gr. 8's Visit Hershey Centre for a 905 Raptors' Game!

Created by students Eitan Elkayam and Max Rotstein:

A Day At The Hershey Centre

Wednesday November 23rd was a very exciting day for Thornhill Woods Public School. The Gr. 8 students along with their teachers went on a trip along with many other schools to the Hershey’s center to watch the Raptors 905 team! Everyone was so excited as they entered the stadium to watch the game. The game went on for about 2 hours and the students and faculty were bursting with thrills as the home team scored and won! The students were very well behaved and listened to their teacher’s instructions throughout the entire time. Everyone had a great time and would love to do a trip like this again!

Remembrance Day at Thornhill Woods P.S.

On Friday, our students experienced a meaningful Remembrance Day.  Intermediate students and their teachers  attended an official ceremony at the Woodbridge Cenotaph.

The ceremony was attended by students from other schools, as well as the Royal Legion, firefighters, police officers and the Mayor of Vaughan.

Students in  Gr. 1 - 6 students were led by a group of Gr. 6 students in a ceremony that began at 10:30 in the gym.  We heard a moving rendition of the poem, "In Flanders Fields", the Last Post and we sang O Canada, to the backdrop of age-appropriate slides depicting  various wars.  At 11:00 a.m. we all observed a minute of silence.

Some of our Gr. 1 students reflected on Remembrance Day in class.

Kindergarten students gathered in one FDK classroom to watch the ceremonies in Ottawa online.

We hope that our students came home with reflections to share and questions to engage their families in discussions about Remembrance Day.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Once again this year, we will be booking our Parent-Teacher Interviews and Student-Led Conferences for SK – Gr. 8 students using an online booking system.

In order to access the booking system you need to go to https://www.schoolinterviews.ca  and enter the school code ym5a7.  Once there, you will be prompted to put in your name, your child’s first name only and your email address.  Your email address is required for you to get confirmation of your appointment times, but it is an optional step.  In other words you can still book your appointments without inputting an email address.  Just be sure to make a note of the date and time.  It is a very simple process, just input your child’s name, his/her grade and select the teacher.  Then you can choose the time that is convenient to you.  The event will open on MONDAY, NOVEMBER 7TH AT 7:00 P.M.

Please remember that the interviews/conferences are 15 minutes in length and we ask that you are prompt and that you don’t go over your allotted time.

If you are unable to meet the teacher on the evening of  November 24th or the morning of November 25th, and if you would still like to communicate with the teacher regarding your child's progress, please call the school and leave a voicemail message for your child's teacher(s).  They will return your call and set up a time to talk on the phone sometime after November 25th.

Should you have any problems with the system, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Green in the office.

Thank you!

Gr. 1 Trip to Pleasant Ridge Library

On Thursday, November 3rd, all our Gr. 1 students, their teachers and some wonderful volunteers walked up to the Pleasant Ridge Library.  They were met by Stephen Lewis S.S. Gr. 11 and 12 students (some of whom were our former students!) and their teachers.

The high school students read their publication "The Dairy of Margaret Reaman" to our students, interspersing a few interesting details about the history of the Thornhill Woods community.  Then each student was provided with his/her own copy of the colouring book format of the publication.   Our students worked in groups, each led by a high school student and coloured in parts of the book.

In addition, they were treated to some snacks and a juice box and then walked back to school. It was a great opportunity to partner with our high school peers and colleagues!

Time to remind children about being safe in our community

It’s time to remind children about being safe in our community.

It’s a good time for parents to remind children about personal safety.

Here's what children need to know:

  • Their name, age, telephone number, address, city and province.  This can be done through rhyme or song.
  • How to contact their parents at any time, by memorizing cell or work numbers.
  • How and under what circumstances to call 911.
  • To never approach or enter a stranger's vehicle.  A responsible adult would never ask a child for directions or any other question for that matter.
  • Make sure they know they have a right to say "no" to an adult, especially when the adult is asking them to do something they have been taught is wrong or feels uncomfortable.  Reminding children of this right is important because children are taught from a young age to respect adults.
  • To always tell parents where they will be and to never enter someone's home without their parent's permission.
  • If home alone, never admit it when answering the phone. Never answer a knock at the door or speak through it.  Adults can be very persuasive.  Teach your child to call you if there is a knock at the door and if they fear for their safety, teach them to call 911.  Make sure they know that police officers are there to help them and would not get mad if it were a false alarm.
  • If they think they are being followed or are in danger they should run home or to a public place.  If someone grabs them, they should try to get away, yelling and screaming while doing so.
  • It is important to play in safe areas, never take shortcuts and stick with a buddy whenever possible.

It is never too early or too late to teach children the importance of personal safety.  Common sense, communication and consistency are the keys. Remind children to alert a responsible adult if something strange happens that makes them feel uncomfortable. Remember, crime prevention is everyone's responsibility.
